Luv-able & Hug-able and a Giveaway

Melody went 7 straight nights of waking up in the middle of the night screaming and crying. It got progressively worse from Thanksgiving. She was so hysterical that nothing could calm her. After 7 nights of her doing that and me getting a migraine from my lack of sleep, I couldn't take it anymore and called the doctor the next morning. She said it sounded like it was behavioral and she is probably going through another stage. The stage where she is more clingy and is beginning to fear things. The doctor told me to let her cry it out and told me what to do if I had to go into her room to check on her. She said that it doesn't sound like she is sick and I agreed. She is totally normal during the day, although a little tired because of her interrupted sleep. I called DH and told him about it, so that I could prepare him for the scream fest that night.

So, that night (last Thursday) I went out because I really needed some time off and to blow off some steam. Anna of Mochimochi Land invited me to the Opening Night of Luv-able & Hug-able, a holiday plush show, at Hanahou Gallery. I have never met Anna before even though we both live in New York. I met Anna through Flickr and I have peridocially test knitted her toy patterns for about 2 years. So, it was about time to put a face to the name.I invited Rima to join me and we had a fun time looking and talking about everyone's work.Above is Anna's work. The Elves are her new pattern just in time for the holidays. Those buildings being attacked by squirrels and snails are fantastic. And it was so nice to finally meet her. She is as nice in person as she is online.Above is Betz White's work. Look up, isn't the breakfast pillow neat? I actually own one of her cup o' joe pincushions. I bought it last year from her Etsy shop and it's so beautiful. If you are on Ravelry, I am sure you have seen one of Caffaknitted's knitted dolls. This is her series of King Henry the VIII and his Wives. Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard are beheadable! You can pop their heads off and put them on their laps. From left to right: Katherine of Aragon, Catherine Parr and Catherine Howard.
Hmmm...who is that hiding behind Melody? Yup, it's Jane Seymour, the 3rd wife of Henry VIII. According to history, she was Henry VIII's FAVORITE wife.I had to buy one of these works of art. It's part of Melody's Christmas presents. It will be put on the shelf with her other knitted dolls (the ones I made for her) until she can play with them. I was so excited and had to show it to her the next day. It was well deserved, especially since she went to bed without waking up after I got home that night. I was prepared for a hard night. So, since last Thursday, it has been touch and go with her. She has been able to cry herself back to sleep without getting all hysterical. And the last few nights, she has only cried out for a few seconds and then goes back to bed. I forgot to mention that her bed time is now much later so that we can get her very tired and hopefully makes her stay asleep. Her later bed time means no time for me to get anything done. I have been staying up late to work on my knitting.Another cool thing is that I got to meet Caffaknitted. She came all the way from North Carolina and was there for the opening night. I feel honored to own a piece of original work. I can't believe that the doll I have is the one pictured on her blog, postcards and her Ravelry page. It is beautifully made. Jane Seymour even has underwear underneath her dress. And that hair is amazing! I had a hard time choosing between 3 of the wives. Thank you, Rima, for helping me choose. And thank you for coming to the show with me.The show runs until January 7th, so be sure to stop by if you are in New York. The plushes and dolls are available for purchase at the gallery and online, at Hanahou Gallery, so you can own an original art plush even if you are no where near New York.

Ooo a giveaway, how fun! The pattern is definitely on my wish list but I haven't allowed myself to buy it because I haven't time to knit it for a bit yet.

I wondered how the sleeping was going (or not). It sounds like it's at least improved a bit.

I just love your little doll! Oh, and the knitted one is lovely too! Sorry to hear that Melody has been giving you so much trouble at night, but I think you are handling it very well. Just stay calm and get lots of sleep when she does so that you can handle the stress. Please enter me in the draw for the scarf pattern. Thanks

I love that pattern! I would love to win it!

That looks like a really fun collection of dolls and toys. I wish I was near NY so I could go see it.

Sorry to hear that Melody is having so much trouble with sleep. I know how stressful that can be. My little sister went through a similar jag when she was a baby and it was really rough on the entire family. I think for about five months no one in my house slept much. My friends in college always wondered why I could sleep through a hurricane. That's why. =) I hope things get better soon!

Lovely doll, what a lucky little girl to get that for a Christmas gift!

Thank you for the tour of the plush show. I feel as if I were there (without the tired feet)!

Congratulations on living through the cry-fest. The hardest thing a mother can do is ignore her crying child, but as you found out - it is a necessity sometimes.

The doll is beautiful as are all the other works of art- that must have been really neat to attend, not to mention meeting some internet friends! I love the one with the squirrels on the buildings - so funny!
I know some people don't think you should ever let a little one cry themselves out, but I've had to do that at least once with all my boys when they'd go through stages. (and they don't seem scarred for life, lol) It's not good for baby if mom is completely exhausted. Hope it gets smoother from here!

oops, ps I'd love to be entered for the pattern contest

Oh ... I get migraine too if I don't sleep well (like having weird dreams which I totally can't recall when awake!) ... true, that's painful. But the good thing is the little one is not crying because she's sick. Wish this stage pass quickly enough for you ...
Lovely pattern ... I'd love to have it ... see if I'm lucky. :) Thanks.

Your friend is a very talented doll maker. Great place she has!

I love Melody's little sweater vest, it's so colorful and cheery. Thanks for posting pics of her. Kinda makes my day. Sorry to hear she's been having trouble sleeping. Hope she settles back to her old routine soon.

I'm so sorry to hear about the crying nights - we went through the same thing with our daughter when she was about 2. Hysterical screaming and crying...but I'm happy to say she grew out of it and it doesn't last forever!! Hope she settles back into her routine soon...just wanted to let you know there is light at the end of the tunnel :-)
And I don't know how to knit so you don't need to enter me in the giveaway.

Oh man, I wanted to go to that craft show so badly...! Totally jealous that you got to meet Anna and everything.

But I'd love to be entered in the contest, if that's okay. :)

the knitted doll is beautiful! I looked at the others online and I think you got the best one. And thanks for the pic of the hair close up. I was wondering how it was done. also, glad to here Melody is doing better. Right after reading and commenting on your last entry the same thing happened to my little girl. At first I was confused, but then I thought, "hey, this seems familiar somehow" haha. Last night was her first night of solid sleep. I loved it. I hope it lasts. And thanks for the giveaway :)

Oh I do hope Melody settles down for you. My daughter used to cry all night when she was very young, but we found out later she was lactose intolerant so it made her tummy all crampy. I loved seeing all those toys in your photos, so many wonderful creations. The doll you purchased is beautiful and I am sure your daughter will treasure it for a long time. Nearly forgot to tell you to include me in your little contest too. Thankyou!

Hi, love your blog. This trick helped me. wrap her fitted crib sheet next to your body so your scent is on it. (not after your morning jog or workout)Wear it for awhile, then put it back on her crib. I know it sounds weird but your baby wants to smell you when she sleeps, not downy or any scent stuff you may use with your laundry, you can also use a blanket (but not so her face gets wrapped into it) when you put her down to sleep she will smell her mommy and feel secure. Sometimes its the simple things that help also a tape recording of your voice, played through the night. Anyway goodluck, please enter me for that beautiful pattern.-ddch

Hi,
Ditto about what ddch said about baby wanting your smell. I unknowing did that with my baby too. I always wore the same sweater when I nursed him. If his blankie was in the wash, the sweater was the substitute to help him go to sleep. I enjoy your blogs. The dolls remind me of the cloth dolls I had as a child.
