A Good Read or Good Eats?

I think she is more interested in tasting the book than reading it.I took a break from knitting this week and dusted off my sewing machine to make Melody a soft book. I got this Winnie the Pooh Soft Book kit from Jo-Ann Fabrics while I was in Boston. It even comes with the batting for inside the book. You just need to cut out the book panels, baste the batting to the pages, sew the book pages with the right sides together, flip it inside out, whip stitch the opening closed, then sew the book pages together. It took me all day to get this done, but that was in between changing diapers, bottle feeding and play times. For those of you without a baby, it would probably take you a few hours. I want to make more of these soft books. I know that they sell just the fabric panels online somewhere (have to do a search when I get the time) and it would be cheaper than buying the kits. I have plenty of batting in my closet. The best part is that it is machine washable. She tends to drool when she does tummy time.

"Books are for reading not eating" was a common phrase in our household years ago. =)

Cute idea and I love the photo where Melody is looking up. She and the camera are good friends, yes?

What a cool idea and smarter than a rippable book!

I didn't know that they sold those as kits. Sewing is truly not my favorite, but I have been tempted to try out one of those panel books. I just haven't found a good selection (even online).
Your turned out great. Perfect for a little reader!

Great job on the book, and she'll just love those the older she gets too. You're so good about doing some sewing, I hardly ever use my sewing machine unless I HAVE too lol ;) BTW, I agree with everyone else, Melody is such a CUTIE!

What a cute little book! I am so impressed that you sewed this with your little one, I didn't sew much when my son was that age!

Love this idea. Eating a book is great! Whatever it takes to keep books in their hands!

that fabric book is such a great idea! I always thought that those were store bought items only. It never occurred to me that you could actually make them yourself.

and, yay! for being machine washable!

The book is amazing. I'll have to keep an eye out for a kit like that for my nephew. Its so clever. Melody is becoming quite the little model, she is such a sweetie.

Wow! That's so fun to make huh! It's so much more personal to sew the book than to buy one! I'm sure Melody will have a great time looking at it!

Btw, I'm reading this book called 'Einstein never used flash cards - How our children really learn and why they need to play more and memorize less by Kathy Hirsh-Pasek and Roverta Michnick Golinkoff'. It's a very interesting book and allow us new parents to 'see' clearly what we should be doing for our children. I highly recommend this book!

Melody makes is really is just a doll! I know I have said that probably a million times on your page, but really, photos of her are so delightful and brightening to look at.
Also, the book is a great gift for a mother to make for her daughter!

Adorable! I've seen just the fabric sold for several different kinds of books at my local Joanns. I'm sure there are places online that sell them too. I may have to make one of these soon too...they look like a fun and easy project.

What a little darling! I just washed our fabric books to put them in storage (boo hoo). My babies are all too old for them anymore. (And yes, you can buy the panels as fabric yardage. I've recently seen them at JoAnn's and independent quilt shops.)

You really know how to photograph that baby.

I am also insanely jealous that you own a pink Hello Kitty sewing machine.

I just LOVE those soft books! Yet another reason I need to learn how to sew. Satya loves soft books, although I don't think they're as fun to chew on. All of your sewing projects look great!
