Last Weekend

Thank you to everyone who left me a comment concerning Melody. I appreciate the advice and encouragement. I am still not sure if she has colic. Some people say that she sounds like she does and others have said she doesn't. If you go by the colic rules with her crying frequency, I would say she does. Next week is her 2 month doctor's appointment, so I plan on talking to the doctor about this. It seemed to have peaked when she hit 1 month old. During the day, she cries during the times that she is awake. I can deal with it during the day. She usually sleeps during the night, but she has off nights like last week. It's a vicious cycle, 2-3 good nights and then a bad night.

After my post last week on Thursday, she was fine on Thursday night and Friday night. Then on Saturday night, she cried until 4:30am. DH takes over on Friday and Saturday nights. Every Friday, I look forward to DH coming home from work. After dinner, I close the door to the office/guest room and no one is allowed to bother me, not even the dogs. We have a Aero Bed (air mattress) set up in there so I sleep there on Friday and Saturday nights. DH sleeps there Sunday-Thursday nights, so he can get uninterrupted sleep. Sundays are a let down because it's my turn again and I don't know if it's a good night or a bad night.

We went over to our friend, Rose's, loft on Saturday night for pizza. It was so nice to get out of the house! Melody was pretty good and only fussed and cried a little. Of course, she had a bunch of people taking turns holding her, so that helped.I baked these Espresso Chocolate Shortbread Cookies for dessert. Everyone seemed to like it and Rose's husband, Marc, commented on how he liked the fact that it wasn't too sweet. It goes well with a cup tea or coffee. I think these taste better than plain shortbread cookies.

The recipe is from Baking: From My Home to Yours. It's a wonderful book with a ton of recipes and stories to go along with the recipes. I often read it before bed time. Am I the only that reads cook books and baking books in bed? You can also find the recipe online, HERE. The technique of rolling out the dough in a ziplock bag is pure genius. It was so easy to cut out uniform sized cookies.Rose got Melody this cute long sleeve onesie. Gifts and Pizza, what a great hostess. This is Veronica. I have featured her on the blog many times before. She was just a wee babe back then. I can't believe how grown up she is. She is Rose's grand daughter and my friend, Jen's daughter.I think this picture is funny. She and her dog, Willow, are sitting next to a crying Melody while watching a They Might Be Giants DVD. It was sweet that they showed concern for Melody.
I even managed to cast on for a new project this past weekend. A top down raglan sweater for Melody. I got the yarn from Rhinebeck last year. It is so soft! The yarn is called Marshmallow by Decadent Fibers. I love the color.

Awww, brings back memories of my oldest.... I feel for you!! The doctor called it colic - I'm not sure if they even know EXACTLY what colic is. I wish I could come over and hold her for you for a few hours. My oldest was so fussy, it was even hard for other people to hold him and have him happy. We'd get together with relatives and they'd all want to hold him but he'd just scream!! I know it seems awful when you're in the middle of it, but it will seem like a distant memory before too long.
Maybe your dr will have some ideas.

Those cookies sound awesome and the little sweater is going to be adorable!

Oh I love the Smitten Kitchen site! Thanks so much for the link.
I hope the doctor would give you assurance that the little one is okay. For the time being, hang in there.

Maybe I'm weird, but I think the photos of crying Melody are cute. Obviously I don't have children.

You will get through this. :)

Poor Melody! Colic, or whatever they call it, is not nice! I have memories of when my daughter was about the same age! I don't know who cried more! I think it was me. Just hang in there! This too, shall pass! The little sweater is lovely - great colour! Just keep knitting whenever you can. It's almost as good as a night's sleep! Well, maybe not quite!

I hope the ped can give you some advice on the colic situation! That must be so frustrating. I think it's really great that you and dh have come up with a good sleeping arrangement so that only one of you suffers at a time, though!

That goo goo onesie is so cute! And that marshmallow yarn looks great in that cute little sweater!

I love the raglan sweater -- it looks so cheerful and I can already imagine that Melody will look adorable in it.
Two more days until Friday!

Oh, the shortbread looks lovely, as does that sweater. So sorry to hear your little one is having a hard time of things, I hope the doctor has some insight for you. Oh and on the cookbooks in bed thing? You're not the only one...I have a stack by the bed. I'm right now reading Zingermans guide to good eating...because one can never eat too well ;)

Oh hang in there. I wish I knew more about babies so I could offer advice. Instead I'll offer comfort: Just hang in there, I think everything will settle down.

I really enjoy baked goods that aren't too sweet and I love shortbread, and I also love chocolate and espresso, so these sound perfect to me!

My daughter used to cry a lot when she was a baby, and yes it started when she was 1 mth old. I bottle fed her on formula, and after 8 mths of trying to work out what was wrong with her we found out she was lactose intolerant and things greatly improved after that. We had to feed her a lactose free formula so she didnt get tummy pains and cry all the time. I do hope you find out what is wrong with your little girl soon too.

That green cardigan is so pretty!

I agree with you - Baking: From My Home to Yours is a great book.

Is she spitting up at all with the crying? My son did a lot of crying when he was still new to the world but there were reflux issues, once that was diagnosed, we were golden.

The yarnd for the the top down ragland is gorgeous.

Dorie Greenspan, isn't she the greatest?

It's so heartbreaking when they cry and you can't do anything about it! Colic was my biggest fear with the twins and luckily we avoided it. I'm hoping you will be lucky too.

Melody is gorgeous and I love your raglan!

I'm not sure I'm being sold on this whole baby thing now. Is it too late to changed my mind ;) Seriously, I hope that things improve for you, hubby and Melody very soon, or at least the docs can offer some pointers.

Also, I read cookbooks all the time before bed! I even "read" japanese cooking magazines, which means I am just drooling over the photos!
At least when you read cookbooks before bed you know it wont be anything too depressing in it!
