Just for Me

I took some time out of making gifts for people to make some things for myself. I noticed that I am always making things for people, but I never make anything for myself. Are all knitters that way? Do you like to make things for people more than you like to make things for yourself? The funny thing is that people usually don't make me anything. Maybe they think that I can make it myself.

After a long hiatus of not making any jewelry, I spent the past few weekends creating new pieces. I had intended to make something for myself, but instead they ended up being gifts for other people. LOL! So, I finally stopped myself and made myself the leaf pendant. It's sterling silver wrapped with green tourmalines. I have been saving that strand for many years and I am happy that I got use some of the beads off of the strand. I am very happy to be wearing my new necklace.A few months ago, I bought my first handspun yarn from Pigeonroof Studios. The yarn was intended for a future knitted baby item, but when I saw this pattern, I knew that this yarn would look great in garter stitch.
I really enjoyed knitting these fingerless mitts. It took me about 2 evenings. I got to use the provisional cast on for the first time. Ysolda has a link to a very good video tutorial using a crochet hook. The short row shaping for the thumb is a great idea. It was fun in the end to unzip the provisional cast on to put the stitches back on the needles for the final grafting. These mitts have been keeping my hands toasty on my subway rides this week. I can't stop admiring the color of the yarn whenever I am wearing them. It's nice to take some time to make something for yourself.

Pattern: Garter Stitch Mitts by Ysolda, free pattern here.
Yarn: Less than 1 skein of Pigeonroof Studios Handspun Handdyed Blue-Faced Leicester (200 yds) in color: Plumberry. Pigeonroof Studios Shop
Needles: US 5 / 3.75 mm
Size: 10 inches long, small size
For Ravelry Users: Link to Pattern
Mods: In the pattern where it says "Repeat last 8 [10] rows 4 times.", I repeated the last 8 rows 5 times.

The pendant is very pretty and delicate. You deserve to do something for yourself, and besides soon enough almost everything you'll be doing will center around a little someone else ;)!! I especially love those mitts, I'm a big fan of garter stitch! Plus anything purple is my friend lol ;)

It's fun to make something for yourself, at least once in awhile. That leaf pendant is just stunning! Your new mitts are really nice too, I've heard good things about Pigeonroof Studios and that does look like lovely yarn. You know, I was going to say that I mostly knit for myself, but then I looked at my Ravelry page and only 1/3 of it is actually stuff for me! I guess I'm giving away more than I thought! : )

Love the Leaf pendant! I am a huge silver fan and it is so delicate. Gloves are really so perfect too!

AND well done for summing up the courage to make something for yourself! =0)

Your jewelry is always gorgeous and the pendant is no exception. I know what you mean about the gifting. My fellow crafters usually give me materials but seldom something handmade.

Your mitts look great - I'm so glad you like the pattern :) The leaf necklace is so simple and beautiful. No one ever makes me things either, but it's a good reason to make things for yourself on occasion :)

That necklace is gorgeous! I can't believe you made it!!

Good for you for taking time to make things for yourself. And I know what you mean about people not making things for you. That's why I love crafty swaps. :) I must admit that I started a hat for myself last night. Got tired of knitting for everyone else! :)

your pendant and mitts are beautiful :)
I probably knit more for others but that's mostly because I live where it's not very practical for me to have all those handknits for myself! The season is way too short down here *sigh*

Those looks beautiful. The leaf looks gorgeous, and the mitts look so warm! Unlike most people, I mostly knit for myself. At the same time, i usually knit things that take years to complete. Quilts I mostly make for other people.

LOL, you're not the only one, when I was reading your post I thought, hmm, what have I made for myself?

That necklace is -so- beautiful! I wish I was that skilled when it came to creating jewelry...

I know what you mean though, since I rarely keep anything I craft for myself as well.

I love both the pendant and the wristwarmers! The pendant is so delicate looking, and--having struggled my way through tubular knit fingerless gloves--I love the idea of garter stitch gloves knit in the flat.

Gorgeous! The pendant is beautiful. The mittens and yarn are a perfect match for each other. I love how simple garter stitch can show off great yarn so well :)

You are so incredibly talented!!! It's so good that you made something for yourself. I tend to to do that too. Not have any of my own creations....they are all off to new homes. Merry Christmas! xxoo, Dawn

I never make things for myself! Everything I made is given as presents to friends and family too :) I think that is the way with us knitters - we're generous souls. I am finally making something for myself, though - a lovely lace scarf.

I love the mittens - I may check out that pattern as I'm bored of fetchings now after two pairs! I really loved removing the waste yarn too - it felt like a magical knitter's secret had finally been revealed to me :)

Funny, I think you're right: while I may have cast on more things for myself, I think I've actually finished more things for other people! Good for you for indulging yourself, the jewelry and the mitts are gorgeous!

It's time to update your little dittie describing yourself to say "jewelry maker" too. That pendant is wonderful. Cool mitts too!
