A Bad Day for Napoleon

I took Napoleon to the Vet this morning for his vaccinations. This is what he looked like an hour after we got home. He was scratching his eyes and there were welts on his eyelids. He had an allergic reaction last year, too, and his face had swollen up and we had to bring him back three times in one day. This time, they gave him a anti-inflammatory shot first to counteract his allergy, but obviously it didn't work.
I called the Vet and they told me to bring him back in. They took him from me when I walked in and had him for 20 minutes. The Vet gave him another anti-inflammatory shot, checked his heart and lungs. I almost cried when they brought him back out. He looked horrible! The Vet said that she thinks it's the rabies shot and he probably should never get it again. They shouldn't have given him all 3 shots at once given his past history.
Now, he looks even worse 3 hours later. Look how puffed up he is. He keeps scratching his face because it itches. He also has welts on top of his head. I feel so bad for him. All he wants to do is lay on my lap, but he can't keep still. He keeps having these weird jerky movements and can't get comfortable. I will be keeping a close eye on him in case it gets worse and we have to bring him into the Emergency Vet Hospital. Please think good thoughts for Napoleon's speedy recovery.

Oh the poor little guy, that looks awful! I hope it passes soon.

Max had a huge lump thingy for weeks at the site of his rabies shot. I'll have to remember to mention it to them when it is shot time again.

Aw! Poor Napoleon! My heart aches at seeing him like that too! When my dog (mini daschund) got ill, I was pretty devasted too. He'll get well.

Poor guy! It is never a good idea to give any dog multiple vaccine injections at a time, particularly small ones. There are two vaccines that are more apt to cause allergic reactions. The one that our current vet has problems with in the most dogs, is the leptospirosis (sp?) one. In fact, they have taken that out of their normal combined vaccine, and you only get that now if you request it. (I do request it, though, because there are lepto infections here in the MidWest, some that have even managed to contaminate water given to marathon runners (people) in Illinois). I always give mine Benedryl now an hour before they get their Lepto vaccine, and then I give them more Benedryl about 8 hours later.

The second vaccine, which is much less likely to cause a problem, is the 3-year rabies vaccine. And, that is the only one that I have personally had a problem with, and that was only once.

I cried when I saw poor little Napoleon. It brought back memories of my Nugget, Lhasa Apso. Her mouth was grossly swollen, as well as her eyes, as well as huge hives all over her body. She got over it, and she eventually had additional rabies vaccinations, but she always had Benedryl at the same time as the vaccine, and then more Benedryl later in the day.
